Types Of Mold
There are thousands of different types of mold that have been identified and studied for their effect on humans. EPA and other research groups have been very successful in being able to use DNA forensics to narrow down the numbers of critical mold species. They have been able to establish Group 1 and Group 2 molds, and the effects they have on occupants of buildings where they have been found.
Group 1 contains a much higher risk of significant respiratory related illnesses. Group 2 molds were found in many homes in low concentrations and people suffered very few respiratory or asthma problems.
However, one thing we must always remember each person can have a different sensitivity level for mold, fungi, bacteria and dust, etc. It is important to watch for any health changes in the occupants of a building.
Some of the most common molds found inside and outside of buildings are Aspergillus, Penicillium, and Cladosporium. They can have varying effects depending on their concentration levels.
Stachybotrys sp (referred to as Black Mold) has been known to cause severe reactions when people are exposed to it in a building. This mold is one that can occur when moisture (leaks, high humidity, etc.) is or has been present.
There are other factors that can cause General Un-Healthy living or working conditions in homes or businesses such as excessive dust, bacteria, and other allergens.
